Happy Birthday to me! It has been one wonderful year since I decided to start shouting from the roof tops that "Girls wear watches too!" It has been one wonderful year since I decided if no one else was going to do it, I was going to be the female voice in the watch world. It has been one wonderful year since the "Watch Queen" put on her crown and showed some love to the amazing people behind the brands and with that in mind I have found the absolutely, without a doubt, most perfect watch to celebrate my first year. It is the "Queen of Hearts" (that's me obviously) by MR JONES.
When I first discovered MR JONES WATCHES I felt like Alice falling down the rabbit hole into a extraordinary world of creative artisans. This watch wonderland journeys you over bridges, through the night sky and takes you on an daily adventure around the world. Here is a place I never want to leave and I don't have to as I can wear a piece of it everyday. This London based brand is unique, artful, innovative and has an edge that has been lacking for those of us who want something creative and appreciate design with a pioneering spirit. The man behind this cult brand, Crispin Jones believes that watches should do more than just tell the time, they should start a conversation, make you think or just make you smile and I could not agree more. Every year they produce a new series of designs which are released in a numbered edition of 100 pieces. If the people love it (how could they not) they update the design (to distinguish it from the limited edition version) and reissue it as part of their permanent collection.
The Queen watch and it's counterpart The King are based on the classic playing card characters, the King and Queen of Hearts. The watches feature hands of cards to depict the minutes while the hours are shown in the royal breast. It takes a little bit of getting used to but the accuracy is very good and glanceability is not what this brand is about. Mr Jones describes this watch as a gentle reminder to keep your cards close to your chest, but to be bold and go all-in when fate has dealt you a winning hand!
Powered by a ST1721 20 jewel automatic mechanical movement, this piece of art is housed in a 316L stainless steel case and is 50m water resistant. Twelve out of the current collection of 32 pieces are mechanical. There are also Quartz and Swiss movements available throughout the collection. Starting at £95 (@$165 AU) and maxing out at £295 (@$513 AU) for a bespoke piece the majority sit between £145 and £195 which is amazing value for something so special. They are starting to pop up in boutique environments throughout Australia but you can purchase directly from MR JONES online and shipping is very reasonable.
As I blow out my First Birthday candle, MR JONES has once again reminded me why the art of time telling is so important. It gives us structure and stability but also counsels us to value each day. To have a piece of art prompting you to do that is a pretty amazing thing. For more information and to view the whole collection visit http://mrjoneswatches.com/
