How we present ourselves says a lot about who we are. So many brands, think Pandora, Alex and Ani and Origami Owl give you the chance to tell your story through their jewellery, but how do I tell a bit about me through my watch. I live in the best place on earth, Queensland Australia where our motto is "Beautiful one day, perfect the next" and it's true it really is perfect. How do you capture the essence of Queensland in a watch? Meet new Swiss players UNE. These cool Swiss watchmakers have taken the Boulder Opal, an Opal only found in the land of sunshine and through precision and design placed an ultra thin layer of genuine rock material in the face. They have captured the colour and diversity of Queensland for the world to see.
When asked "Why the Boulder Opal?" Marc Frehner, the founder and CEO of UNE spoke of his close connection to Queensland. "It was clear from the start, that we wanted to have a UNE from every continent. I have strong friend and family ties with Queensland and have spent a lot of time there so the Boulder Opal it had to be. It is just so beautiful and most people visiting Australia do spend some time in Queensland. If you want to bring home a genuine piece of Australia then it must be a Boulder Opal as it only exists in Queensland.
After our first pre-serial edition of which we are now selling the first 9 timepieces, we got to know a miner from Queensland who was interested in cooperating with us. They are operating a mine and wanted to see how their gemstone quality boulder would look in a watch. The boulder used is called ‘koroit’, quite hard to manufacture watch faces, but very promising when you look at the color and textures."
Currently in the development process these savy designers are manufactuing methods and calculating the costs to bring us a unique series made from the Koroit Boulder Opal. Currently there are just 6 pieces with different dial colours and bracelets that will be shown in the US before coming to Australia in March, which you get an exclusive sneak preview of here at CC. BAUSELE Pilot Automatic
What does Australia Day mean to you? To me it's a day to celebrate living in an amazing country with the best family and friends anyone can hope for. It's a day to be thankful for our country and be mindful of our past while striving for a reconciled future. It's a day of hope.
So what watch do I write about on Australia day? Who is innovative and creative and embodys the Australian Spirit? The answer BAUSELE. The watch THE BAUSELE PILOT AUTOMATIC.
BAUSELE is the first Swiss made, Australian designed watch company and let's be honest, that's awesome. They are paving the way for innovation in the Australian watch industry. When unboxing this beauty I was a little taken aback. The watch is inspired by the watches of aviation pilots with the 12 on the face situated at the traditional 2 position, in theory this gives the advantage of telling the time without having to move your wrist. This is something I had to trial as it seems askew when you first put it on. When driving and typing and anytime that my hands are in front of me the 12 does actually sit at the top and the time is easy to read. When just glancing to tell the time I got confused, it takes a little to get used too. You will either love it or hate it, I don't think there is a middle ground.
Apart from the dial what stands out to me is the hollow crown. Distinctive to BAUSELE, each one contains unique elements of Australia including Red Earth from the Outback, Sand from the Beach or Opal from the Land. With sapphire crystal glass a Swiss movement and symbolic design elements like the second hand shaped to evoke the Sydney Tower, this watch gives you the chance to take that little bit of Australia everywhere you go. If you are looking for that distinctive piece of Australiana in your collection then look at BAUSELE. RRP starts at $1290. Visit http://www.bausele.com/ for stockists.
